A revolution in shoe sizing and purchases

A revolution in shoe sizing and purchases

Designing the app and brand for a technology that finally solves shoe sizing — 300 years in the making.

Designing the app and brand for a technology that finally solves shoe sizing — 300 years in the making.

Six out of ten people are wearing the wrong size shoes. Not because they haven't tried to find the right fit — but because the system for measuring feet hasn't changed in three centuries. The inner volume of every shoe in the world is still calculated the same way it was 300 years ago. Right Size Company (RSC) had a solution: a patented physical kit and smartphone app that uses computer vision and machine learning to measure feet accurately and match them to the right shoe, every time. The people behind it had already measured over 40,000 feet with Left Foot Company between 2000 and 2010. By 2020, the technology had caught up with the idea. RSC approached us in 2020 to design the world-class experience the technology deserved — the app, the brand, and the physical measurement kit.

Designing around a complex problem, simply

Shoe sizing sounds simple. It isn't. Feet are asymmetrical. They change shape over time. The most important measurement — girth, the circumference of the foot — is almost never factored into standard sizing charts. And existing digital sizing tools had failed not because the measurement was wrong, but because they didn't know what to do with it. We started with user research in two parts: targeted surveys to understand shopping behaviours and how people think about shoe purchases, and in-depth interviews with stakeholders, technologists, and footwear specialists to map the domain from the inside. From that, we built a service ecosystem canvas and identified the key touchpoints and user flows for the RSC Android application. Three design principles guided the app: a simple, guided measurement experience that makes your foot data an invisible marker for everything that follows; personalisation and discovery that shows you only shoes that will actually fit; and a storytelling layer that creates awareness of why this problem matters — both for individual health and for the environment. The design moved quickly into high-fidelity prototyping in Figma, used to test with both the client and the development team before a single line of production code was written.

"There are several fitting systems for measuring the foot accurately. But knowing what to do with that information is the challenge — that's where existing systems fail, and that is what we will revolutionize." — Client, Right Size Company

Brand, kit, and the results that followed

Once the app moved into development, we shifted focus to the RSC brand and the physical measurement kit. The brief was honest: fast-paced project, limited budget, solid foundation forward. We explored a technology-driven, generative visual direction, but the final identity landed somewhere different — simpler, grounded in honesty and trust. Because the core of the brand is heritage, knowledge, and expertise. Technology is the enabler, not the story. That direction also works for B2B. RSC's kit can sit behind a brand or manufacturer — enabling the platform while keeping the partner's identity front and centre. The visual language supports that future without demanding it. The Right Size Kit itself — a smartphone app plus a physical foot-scale and band — makes accurate measurement accessible on any camera, not just high-end hardware. It takes seconds. The measurement is stored in the app. Shopping becomes a different experience: filtered to what fits, ordered to what's available, without charts or guesswork.

At time of writing, the app delivers 80–90% accuracy in finding the right fit. The remaining cases involve exceptional foot shapes requiring manual input — already a roadmap item. Expected reduction in returns: approximately 50%. "Our collaboration with Nordkapp was a great experience. The scope was clear, each phase delivered on time, and communication was open and easy." — Topias Fonsén, Pomarfin Oy
